Question
Hi, my name is omar and i would really like to become an FBI agent. But in order to get to the agency i will need at least 3 years of investigative experience. So first i need to become a police officer. Besides becoming a detective, how else can i get investigative experience and how long does it take to get to the position where i can investigate to get experience.

Thank you, I would really appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Omar,

I am not sure where you got your information, but the FBI takes people straight out of college as long as you have a 4 year degree in an area they need.

As for getting investigative experience, that can be done by simply becoming a police officer. You don't have to be a detective to investigate things. Almost every police officer does investigations of some form or another on a daily basis. This is directly from their employment website (http://www.fbijobs.gov/111.asp):

To become an FBI Special Agent you must be a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands. You must be at least 23 years of age, but younger than 37 upon your appointment as a Special Agent. You must possess a four-year degree from a college or university accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States Secretary of Education. You must have at least three years of professional work experience. You must also possess a valid driver's license and be completely available for assignment anywhere in the FBI's jurisdiction.

All applicants for the Special Agent position must first qualify under one of five Special Agent Entry Programs. These programs include:

Accounting
Computer Science/Information Technology
Language
Law
Diversified
More details about Special Agent Entry Programs.

I think you read the three years of "professional work experience" to mean law enforcement. I means any professional job for three years. You can have been an accountant, lawyer, professor or some other professional position. So there you are.

Good luck and I hope you make it into their program. Be well and stay safe.
