Careers: Police/Questions
Expert: Loren Stevens - 1/12/2010
Question ive read through alot of your answers and they have helped me, but i still have some questions, im about to graduate a 2 yr course in mechanical engineering, and ive had second thoughts about this as a career. my greater intrest lies within Federal Law Enforcement or a Special Operations within the police department. Alot of young people are interested because of the way its portrayed in hollywood and they think that would be a cool job, but thats not the case. I know what will be expected of me, and i have every intention of proving my self more than worthy, i understand a degree and or millitary xp is a plus, but im not really sure either are an option at the moment, if you have any input or suggestions they would greatly be appriceated.
Thank You,
Shawn
AnswerHello Shawn,
Well sir, I'll convey some thoughts, at the risk of confusing you more, rather than advancing clarity.
The interests you list, are just too vague. You really need to determine, with specificity, what it is you want to do, and predicate that with an understanding as to why.
What is your motivation for your selections?
Keep in mind, there is something like 53 federal police agencies. There are law enforcement components in virtually every federal department. DOD in general, and all the subdivisions have a law enforcement aspect.
And, I should also say, that the term "special operations" is something that does not enjoy a universal definition, among all city, county, and state police agencies.
An analyst, can be assigned to a "special ops" unit, and never leave the office.
I guess what I am trying to say, is to do more research, and try to narrow the field of interests you can. With a clear grasp of what you want, why you want it, and which agencies offer the best opportunities, seems like a logical way in which to proceed.
Most of these agencies have a site on the web. and you can contact any of them for career information.
I am confident, that after you do the leg work, you will feel better about the direction you want to head.
Good Luck.
