Question
Hello,
I am currently attending eastfield college and am majoring in criminal Justice. I have been pondering the idea of becoming a homicide detective and I want to know the steps I should take to get there. I know that this career is not like the tv shows on tv, so I have a realistic mindset. Could you please tell me what to expect.

Answer
Janet, the only effective way to become a homicide detective is to become a sworn peace officer, apply yourself, learning all there is to know about case law, search warrant affidavits, informants, and rules of evidence.  Put in at least five to eight years in the field, then get into an investigative unit that will give you the basic detective experience you will need to apply to a homicide unit.  Let it be known as you progress through the various steps that your goal is to work homicides.  By the way, select a large department where the opportunities are greater.  Good luck.

I`ve spent twenty-five years in law enforcement as a state trooper and deputy sheriff. Retired as a lead homicide investigator. My interest is in answering questions dealing with ethical and moral dilemmas facing officers in the field.
