Question
I'm 17 and home schooled,I'm thinking about being a S.W.A.T sniper.I shoot on a regular basis, and can hit my target anywhere I want to.Being home schooled is there any classes that I need to go to? Are there any classes I'll have to take to make S.W.A.T? I live in a good sized town in Louisiana, but there are hardly any need for S.W.A.T there, what is a good police job to have when my assistance is not needed? Thank you for your time and replies.

Answer
Hello Joesph,
You need to understand, that SWAT is a subdivision, of a subdivision of a law enforcement agency. Typically, special operations comes under "uniform field services ' then, under special units or some other breakdown. It is NOT usually considered a "career", and most SWAT officers would not want a career of the late night call-outs, conditioning, repetitive training, etc.
The bigger the agency, and population being served, the more likely they will enjoy a Special Operations units.
You first need to get hired on the agency, as their entry level officer/agent. This is usually uniform patrol services. Maybe 10% of applicants get hired..or less. Then you need to get through the academy, and field training after that. I wouldn't expect a realistic shot at a specialized unit in less than say 5-7 years. Then, you'll need to distinguish yourself at that entry level position.
You'll need atleast a HS or GED diploma for most city, county and state agencies.
The more "stuff" you can pony up, the better your chances. Many skill-sets are difficult to attain. The candidates with the most/best relevant skills, is usually favored. And, a sniper is only one function of many in a SWAT unit.
The competition for these type unites is quite spirited. Guys who have military experience, and combat experience and MOS's that relate to special ops are in a better position, (other things being equal).
Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck,
Semper Fi,
loren
