Question
I made the terrible and not to mention stupid mistake of Driving after drinking. I got into an accident and was charged with a DWI. I Would like to be a police officer if that is at all possible. I have heard from other People in Law Enforcement , That it all depends on how you explain yourself and the incident. If you get hired or not. I am extremely embarassed by this mistake and hope that it doesnt hauntt me later in my life. Im just wondering if I should change my major and give up on my dream of being a police officer or should I keep with it?

Answer
Dusty, you are correct...much depends on how things are explained however, much depends on how much time has passed since the DUI...if you were young and did a foolish thing, there is room for understanding and putting youthful inexperience into the equation.  Also, you mentioned you are in college.  I would continue with your studies and take advantage of ride-alongs if there are offered in your area. I am also presuming that there are no other blots on your record.  In today's world much depends on an applicants background...relatively clear record, college educated, not in financial ruin, stable in all other things...a good prospect for law enforcement.  By the time you finish school, there will be time between your DUI and your application.  When it comes to the oral board, just tell them like it happened...no minimizing it, just tell them it was a total letdown in your own world and your family's world and that it was a glitch in your otherwise good record.  I really think you will make it.
