Dear Mr.Wagoner

I'm currenty a 35 year old correctional officer of three years and I don have a criminal record. I've always wanted to be a police officer,but I'm about to file for bankruptcy. My question:  Would I have an ok chance of being hired,or should I give up the dream and think about doing something else?

Good morning Jerome,

while agencies are not looking at credit as strongly as they used to a bankruptcy still for most agencies is a disqualifier and I would have to say that your chances of being hired are greatly diminished. The reason being that agencies consider it a inability to pay your responsibilities and therefore think that it might carry over into your professional career. I don't necessarily always agree with this but that's the case in most agencies.

I would look at staying as a correctional officer if you are currently still employed is one as the chances for dance men and continued employment in that field are very good.

I am a 30+ year veteran police officer, I am currently the Police Academy Commander of an Academy in North FLorida. I have been training police officers since 1993 and have trained them in all aspects of law enforcement, including firearms, Driving and legal subjects including patrol techniques and others and training all over the world. I have trained over 5000 officers worldwide in the last 16 years of training.
