Answer
William, it seems that your son is caught between the proverbial rock and hard place.  I jointed the Alaska State Police and then the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept.  When it came time for my retirement, I found that I was able to add my military time to my time spent as a police officer.  It requires a pay-in for time spent in the military but believe me it is money well invested.  Your son would most likely be a good candidate for police work.  It is very secure and not that dangerous if one keeps alert.  I would not hesitate to recommend this line of work and it seems that  your son would have a good start what with the military discipline.  I would hope that all other things are okay such as his record, finances, etc.  Good luck.
