Careers: Police/illegal drugs

Question
Sir,
I am in the middle of the application stage for a self sponsored police academy. In the question packet it asks if “you have ever used illegal drugs before”. I am a 44 year old Army combat Vet, I am a model citizen; clean driving record, clean criminal record, great credit history, just perfect everything. I had a 7 panel drug test that was all negative of course. But about 23 years ago I snorted cocaine several times (young and dumb) and never touched illegal drugs since. I would never lie about it on paper or on a lie detector test. My question is do you think this old issue will disqualify me? And if they say it does can I do anything about their decision? Thank You for your time.

Answer
Good Morning Jeff,

I think you answered your own question. You say "I would never lie about it on paper or on a lie detector test" and that is the right answer. I can tell you now that very few agencies will wash out or experimental drug use 23 years ago, as long as it is not a pattern shows addiction or other psychological issues, which years does not, so go ahead and listed and I don't think it will be a problem for you. It just depends on what your definition of "several times" means.

I think you will be okay.
