Expert: Loren Stevens - 8/31/2011
QuestionHi Loren, I am 15 and since i was 5 i have wanted to join the police force, however i am worried that i will not get in unless I excel at my GCSE's. I would like to join as a standard everyday police officer on the streets. Could you please tell me the requirements of eye sight and also educational to join the force. Just because you are not clever does it mean you cannot join?
Kind Regards
Kieran
AnswerHello Kieran,
Interesting question.
I am not well versed in the police entrance issues for the UK.
But if it would be helpful to you, I will offer some suggestions, and commentary.
"Clever" is not the point, however, as you should know, there will be a certain academic level of expectation.
Usually, this level of understanding is high school grad, or some college, or specialized training course. And, there are a few agencies that have raised their academic standards....because they can. An agency is always going to proceed with their own best interests first. This includes attracting the best qualified candidates as they can. It is very competitive out there, in search of talent...My counsel to ALL of those interested in a police career, is to work at being the most prepared and attractive candidate as you can. "Attractive" meaning, you have an abundance of qualifications desirable to the position.
In general, what is being sought, is CHARACTER....this is an all inclusive perception, where honesty, truthfulness, good citizenship etc are all on the table.
You want to avoid criminal record, use of drugs, abuse of alcohol, be physically fit, clean driving record, avoid 'stupid' debt, and so on.
There is no ONE quality that trumps all others. But there are plenty of 'things' that would end your being considered.
Do some volunteer work at the agency you have in mind, and learn the organization, rules, internal controls et al.
Take up a hobby or two, that may apply to police interests, like: martial arts, written/oral communication skills, non-verbal communication skills, cultural differences, law etc.
You can see the trend I hope...
Enhance your skills, knowledge, abilities, and you strengthen your personal marketability.
Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck,
loren
