Careers: Police/Acceptable job application question response

Question
am in the process of filling out an application for a local law enforcement department, but I am stuck on how to answer a question honestly.  It’s a psychological question based...the question is one that when asked no one can answer no, they have never taken anything.  I have never intentionally taken anything, but have unconsciously walked off with a pen, scissors, or even keys.  Nothing what so ever of any great value.  What would be an acceptable yet honest answer to this question in terms total value...?
If you had to place a dollar amount on the property that you have taken throughout your lifetime, what would that amount be? This amount should also include any theft from an employer, including, but not limited to pens, paper, other office supplies. Please provide the dollar amount below and describe the items taken.

Answer
Tracie:

I think the correct answer would be "zero", since you never had any intent to steal or perm. deprive anyone of any property.  It doesn't sound like you have stolen anything.  This is a trick question, BTW, looking to make you into some sort of thief even if you are not.

If you really feel like you have to answer this question, though, (and it's not a bad idea), "Misc. Office supplies" and a total dollar amount of 5-10 dollars.  That's probably about right for most of us anyway, unless you were walking out the door with cartons of paper or boxes of ink pens or something!  :)

Best of luck,
