Question
My friend would like to become a police officer, but he has tried numerous
drugs in his past. He is now clean, and will respond honestly on the polygraph
test, but will he be hired? I know they are lenient about marijuana, but what
about other drugs?

Answer
Laura, much depends on when the drug abuse occurred and what drugs were involved.  If the drug experience was some time ago and the person can convince the examining board that it was a passing fad, then perhaps the board will consider the person.  Drug use is not uncommon but long term drug use can spoil the efforts big time.  I hope your friend does not fit that type.  Good luck to him or her.
