AboutMike Martin Expertise I have been a certified Police Officer for 33 years. While I cannot answer legal questions (I am not a lawyer, just a cop) I can answer questions related to proper police procedures and techniques. I cannot answer questions involving employment qualifications. Each department is different. You will need to check with the department where you wish to apply.

Question I'm not sure if this is within your listed areas of expertise, but in case it is, I hope you won't mind me asking.
I'm writing a fictional piece about two foster children, and I'd like to be as accurate as possible. Basically, the parents of two children die (while away). So, I'd like to know:
1. Who/How would the children be approached (still at school, for example) and notified?
2. Where would they be taken that day?
3. If they have no living relatives, who would set up foster care for them, how long might that take, and where would they stay until that is arranged?
If you are able to answer any of those questions, please do. Thank you for your time!
Answer This would vary from state to state, but here in Iowa, the initial approach to the children would probably be by someone who knows them well, a teacher or pastor or such. Those folks would have been notified by the police. The Department of Human Services would take custody of the children and the would be placed in foster care almost immediatly.
