Careers: Police/Children

Question
I'm not sure if this is within your listed areas of expertise, but in case it is, I hope you won't mind me asking.

I'm writing a fictional piece about two foster children, and I'd like to be as accurate as possible. Basically, the parents of two children die (while away). So, I'd like to know:

1. Who/How would the children be approached (still at school, for example) and notified?
2. Where would they be taken that day?
3. If they have no living relatives, who would set up foster care for them, how long might that take, and where would they stay until that is arranged?

If you are able to answer any of those questions, please do. Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hi,

Actually I doubt if the police would be involved in going to the school at all.  I can't see any reason that they would.  It would probably fall into the responsibilities of the social services agency or the school system to make the notification to the children, set up foster care, etc.  To be honest with you it would be very far fetched for two children not to have any living relatives so I think that I would back away from that.  Just not believeable in the real world.  I advise several authors or beliveablity, scenarios, etc, and I don't think that would be beliveable.

However......if you want to stick with this then the length of time to set up foster care, adoption process, where they would stay would vary on the juristiction where all of this is happening because every state, county, etc, has diffrent laws concerning this kind of thing.

Expertise

U.S.: I am an expert in this category for the purpose of giving young people an idea what the hiring process involves for the position of police officer. I am getting a flood of questions from young people who are being influenced by unrealistic television shows. I'd ask you to consider that when you watch police shows on television that they are NOT realistic and most of what you see does not happen in real life. Please do not ask me about potential jail sentences that you, your friends, or family might receive in court. There is no way for me to know that. I am NOT a probation officer so I cannot answer questions about probation and parole matters. I am a retired police officer with 26 years experience.I worked in a variety of assignments including investigations, homicide, sex crimes, runaway investigations, missing persons, and fraud.I also dealt with the general public during that time giving a wide range of advice on matters such as domestic disputes, problem solving, teenage problems, civil/criminal matters, and dealing with the mentally ill. I am available to give sound and reasonable advice which can solve most problems. Please do not ask me to do homework questions or online interviews. Young people should not rely on the Internet for interviews. Local police officers are normally very agreeable to assist students with interviews and surveys.
