Question
Hi,
what kind of dogs are usually preferred to be used for law enforcement and why? Also, do dogs have any general reaction to violence? Do they look to subdue attackers, protect themselves, or protect their masters first? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Quentin, this is a great question. The most popular dog used in canine is the German Sheperd. However, alot of agencies have gone to the belgian malinois and some retrievers. It has become very difficult to find sheperds here and abroad. The German Sheperd is most widely prefered becomes of their detection abilities and also the prey drives.
The answer to your second question is that dogs have several drives that we utilize for police work. Prey drive, defense drive and of course the ability to survive all play important roles. Dogs will protect their masters first.

Glad to help
Paul
