Question
Hello my name is Nathan im 19 years old.Im in the Army National Guard im a infantryman and I was wondering how helpful that would be in Law Enforcement.Im wanting to become a State Trooper here in Tennessee and Im looking for advice from a veteran like yourself about how to get in the Highway Patrol

Answer
Nathan, there is no specific background that is better than others for preparing one for law enforcement, however, there are a few essentials.  You should have a clear background...in other words, when a recruiter looks at your background he will see that you are not easily drawn into questionable activities, i.e., gambling, drugs, booze, women (beyond the normal pursuits).  Being in the National Guard prepares you somewhat for understanding people (street sense) and gets you attuned to the concept of chain of command.  Frankly, I would get a college degree as most cops today have a degree.  Hopefully, your past work efforts were exemplary.  As for SWAT...shooting skill is paramount but this can be trained into an individual if the person really wants to improve.  Hope this is what you were looking for.  Good luck.
