Question
Why do police officers take their cruisers home with them at the end of their shift?  Couldn't the police force do with 2/3 less patrol cars if the cars were used for 3 shifts per day?

Answer
Stan,

Some departments choose to allow officers to take their cars home because they are a deterent to crime. It gives the preception that there are more officers on patrol then there really are. Some departments even allow officers to use the cruisers to go to the store. This is also with the understanding that the officers are considered on duty during these times. Hope this answered your question.
