Question
Hi, I have always wanted to be a police officer.  I do however have a minor case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and am wondering if this will dysqualify me from getting a job with most police agencies.  I take medicine for it on an "as needed" basis.  Thanks for the advice!

Answer
Hello,
I doubt that your condition would stand in the way of police employment. During the course of a career, you may have times where you might have to take some sick leave, but that is what it is for.
When agencies require a physical examination, they are essentially looking for two things:
1- can the candidate physically do all that is expected and required of the position?
and 2- are there preexisting conditions that would prohibit physical activity that is required, or be a cost effective challenge. There are also legal areas in the mix for pre existing conditions that need to be entertained.
good luck, hope this is helpful.
You might want to contact the agency you are interested in, and inquire about physical issues to a personnel supervisor.
