Question
Hi, im in 12th grade and i am thinking about going into the police force as a career. But the problem is, is that i have no idea where to begin, how long of education is needed, is there colleges i can go to or is it a tech type of school, is there training i have to go, how long is that, what are the different branches and do they all get the basic type of education. Sorry this is a lot, but if u can answer them that would help me a lot. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Mike,

Thanks for the question.

A local community college or a technical college can probably offer you what you need. Go to either one or both and speak to a counselor about your career choice.

While you are in school, make some inquiries at some of the local police agencies in your area and see if they offer any Police Explorer programs. This will get your feet in the door and you will learn a great deal about police work and what it offers and some of the challenges you will be faced with in law enforcement.

Most police agencies only require a High School education, but a lot are now requiring some college or a college degree. Take some courses that involve writing. It is important in police work that you have an understanding of correct grammar and word usage.

Police agencies are looking for individuals that have a great deal of common sense, well-rounded, can manage a good deal of stress and be able to work under pressure. You also need to be in good physical condition.

Hope this gets you started. Good luck and best wishes!
