Question
Dear Paul Koinig

My name is Patrick Duffy, I am a third year journalism student from Staffordshire University. I have decided that after my study I want to join the police force.

Because of my interest in the force I have decided to base a project on policing in the 21st Century. The project will be split up into 5 short features based on some aspects of the police force.

One of the features, focus' on police training and recruitment. I was wondering if you could help me by answering a few questions to help me with your feature.

1)   How has police recruitment changed in the 21st Century?

2)   Has it got easier or harder to join the police force?

3)   What do you think are the reasons why police training has changed?

4)   What characteristics do you believe are necessary to become a successful officer?

5)   What are the new dangers facing police officers in the new century?

6)   What advice would you give to a young recruit just starting in the force?

7)   What else do you think should be done to improve policing in the 21st century?

Thank you very much for your time, I would be extremely grateful if you could get back to me with your comments to these questions.

It is not necessary for the for the feature to be published, but if it is to be published would you want me to use quote your name in the story or just refer to you as a source.

Yours sincerely

Patrick Duffy

Answer
Patrick, I will be glad to assist you with your project!
First of all, as we all now realize, society has changed tremendously in the last few decades. We now have the generation X police officer. He/She is college educated and presumably sharper. However, the criminal element has also advanced. One thing I will assure you is that the criminal element will always be one step ahead! Anyway as for recruitment, it is harder to get on with an agency primarily due to conditions that have surfaced with one's moral character. My agency, for example, puts strong emphasis on traffic citations and college mistakes. Sorry, as a veteran I feel this to be ridiculous, but I am just a lowly worker. Successful officers will be developed from the individual. This will never change. One that excels will always rise to the top. Dangers in our society deal with technology. Again the criminal element dictates where policing goes. Finally, one wanting to endeavor into the policing field must have patience, openmindedness and the ability to interact with everyone no matter the situation.
