Question I am in Training Academy to become a Police Officer, and I have a huge crush on my Field Trainer. He was also my Private Investigator, and highly recommended me for the job. I feel he likes me too- a lot. Is this a conflict of interest,if we began dating? Could either one us get fired? I really want to be with this man, and I know he wants to date me also. What do I do??????
Answer Patsy,
Thanks for the question.
DON'T do it!!!!!!!
Both of you could potentially get into serious trouble with your employer. A Training Officer dating his rookie?? Not a sign of maturity on his part. These relationships can last, but more often do not. His relationship with you could be some cause for concern. it could been seen as sexual harassment if problems develop between you and him.
It's not good policy to date where you work. I know, some instances it works and there is never any problems, but more often than not it is a huge mistake to get involved in a relationship with someone where you work.
It could also be a safety issue. Is he going to be more concerned with your safety because of his emotional ties to you than to react properly or not at all if you are in a volatile situation?
If you two are not going to be working directly together and he will not be supervising you in any capacity, I say go for it and good luck. On the other hand, if there is a potential for any conflict, do not do it at all, unless one of you are willing to work at a different agency.
