Question
Hi. After 20 years on the streets I find myself given the boot. I was forced into retireing. I am now looking for a new career where the nice guy doesn't finish last. I have many certifications and accolades. I was never on my "own" personal agenda so it was hard to advance in my department. Any advice for a young retiree?

Answer
Robert, not knowing what background you had, if you did indeed have some investigation experience, I would opt for something in the high end investigative field.  There are myriad opportunities out there.  I see job postings for retired detectives in many areas.  I don't know how big the department was you retired from but the L.A. County Sheriff's Department retirees have a wonderful website that throws all kinds of retiree jobs at them, some with really great salaries.  Also, there are quite a few armed bodyguard jobs available, now that there is so much concern about security in the world now.  Hope this helps.

I`ve spent twenty-five years in law enforcement as a state trooper and deputy sheriff. Retired as a lead homicide investigator. My interest is in answering questions dealing with ethical and moral dilemmas facing officers in the field.
