AnswerHello Stefano,
Well, you pose an interesting question.
If I were the SWAT cmdr, I'd want to know EXACTLY why this particular assignment appeals to you.
Some of the things you should consider in preperation for this goal, is to do the obvious: stay out of trouble, NO DRUGS, or alcohol problems, keep your grades up etc.
The functional aspects, would include: Taking NRA approved classes, clubs, etc.
And, It would be good to consult with your school counselor on your desires. S/he may be able to help you reconcile what it is you find attractive about sniper work.
There is a LOT of head-stuff to consider with that kind of job, as you are essentially training to take a life upon command. The life you take, is someone you know nothing about. Will there be religious conflicts? conscience conflicts? et al.
Also, Nobody is hired for SWAT, or any subdivisions thereof (sniper)
You'd have to be interested in becomming a police oficer as your initial goal. You would only be considered for a special assignment AFTER the academy, successful completion of "field training", and "X" amount of time as a field uniform patrol officer. Then, the would have to be openings in SWAT, and replacements is a very competitive process. There again, you need to go in as a grunt-rookie SWAT officer, prior to any specialization. If you do get a shot at sniper, you most certainly would start out as a "spotter" for a seasoned veteran, who already has that position.
I speak of generalities, as things MAY go quicker for you, or, you may never get what you want. LOTS of variables in the process.
Also, most agencies run their SWAT personnell through a series of mental/emotional testing, for character and behavioral traits, assessments.
So you see, just the marksman skills isn't enough. And, for what ever it's worth, many of the police snipers, have experience as military snipers as well.
Hope this gives you "stuff" to think about, and was helpful.
good luck,
loren
