Careers: Police/Schooling and Female Cops

Question
I have wanted to be a police officer since I was about 5. I was wondering what paths you think are best starting from high school. Example: What classes to take in high school moving on to college/university?
I was also wondering if it's tougher for female cops to find work in the force than males? I wonder  because I have seen few females and I know the training must be tough to go through.
I'm 16 and I only have two more years left of high school, I could really use the guidance.
Thanks!

Answer
Danielle,

Thanks for the question.

Any kind of Civics or Government class in high school is a good start. People need to know how our government works and how it operates.

After high school or even during high school, there are Police Explorer or Police Cadet programs all over the United States that you can participate in. Try the various agencies that might be in your area and see if they have any of those programs. If they do not have any, you can still do volunteer work at a local agency. this will get your feet in the door.

In college, you can take pre-law or law courses. Most colleges have them readily available. Psychology courses are also good as well as writing courses. As a police officer, you will be doing a lot of report writing, so that is important.

As far as being female and being difficult. Law enforcement is still male dominated, but females and minorities are ever increasing to reflect our societal changes. Females are expected to perform the same as men. Criminals don't care if you're male/female.

Hope this helps out.

Good luck and best wishes!
