Question
For a class project we have to figure out how we would handle a hostage situation in a building on school grounds. The people holding others hostage are terrorists. I pretty much have all angles covered except for the media. How would I address them since this situation invloves terrorists. Sholud I tell them very basics of the situation and leave out the terrorist fact? What were some of your departments policies on media in these situations.
I have been retired for quite a few years so I am probably not the best person to ask this question since the policies and situations have changed so much. I will say that in a situation like you have described the less you tell the media the better off your officers and the hostages will be.

I am available to give sound and reasonable advice which can solve most problems. Please do not ask me to do homework questions or online interviews. Young people should not rely on the Internet for interviews. Local police officers are normally very agreeable to assist students with interviews and surveys.

Graduate of the University of Maryland.B.S. in Law Enforcement.Attended numerous schools and training courses involving investigations, interviewing, interrogations, crime detection, domestic violence, and others. Recognized in court as an expert witness.
Received numerous awards during my police career for expert investigations. Handled the most sensitive and confidential investigations. In 1999 I won an award for my work with high school students while working in my new career in a large suburban high school.
