Question
Hi Jim,
This isn't really police related, I don't think, but I am having a very hard time finding any information about it. I live in Michigan and recently got a form from my employer for medical insurance. I denied coverage becuase I am under someone elses plan and don't need it. They returned the form back to me and told me that in order to deny coverage I need proof within 30 days that I am covered or else they will take the deductions from my check against my consent. I am wondering if they would be breaking the law by doing this? Is there any such law that says that your employer can require medical insurance?
Thanks,
Bailey

Answer
Hi Bailey,

I know of no law at least in Ohio that states you must have medical coverage. In fact most employers are thrilled that you don't take it. I do know that some employers will give you more money if you already have coverage, and don't accept theirs. Even though you may pay a portion, the norm for a single person in approximately $500.00 per month that coverage costs.

I know Michigan law though. So if I were you I would contact the wage and hour division of the State of Michigan. I'm sure they can also help you with benefit questions. I have included their address, phone and email below. I hope this helps somewhat. If I can ever do anything else for you, just ask.
