Answer
Okay John...long question so I'll answer by the numbers:
1. yes, a number of times...most notably when my partner in homicide disarmed a triple murder suspect from behind when he had me up a creek with you know what
2. OOh, I answered the wrong question....here is the real #1...Being outdoors (most of the time) and doing a job that had relatively fast results...and meant something
3. No, before that I was an air traffic controller, a bush pilot and a not-to-successful writer.
4. 29 years
5.  No
6. That is what they are...sterotypes...but in some rare cases, they apply...it is alwars expected that those who wear the uniform will take heat in some form or another...remember the endearing name "the pigs"?
7. TMP Too many people and people having unrealistic expectations about life...life is what you make of it. end of story.
8. Mostly nightime hours...worked early morning shift when on patrol and did  my best work at night when working homicide.
9.  When I put some realy low-class scumbag in the grey bar hotel and what I disliked was the number of "golden boys" who become cops to scramble up the promotion ladder to become paper pushers.
10. I learned to survive on the streets as a teenager and I paid attention to details about people...what motivated them and what seemed to work in negotiating live around them.   Hope this helps.
