Question
I am in desperate need of an answer please???In 2001 I was a nurse, I had knee surgery and got addicted to pain meds.I was calling them in to the pharmacy from work and the police caught me and charged me with deception to obtain a controlled sub.I was given 6 months in jail and then released to a 3 mo. in-patient rehab and placed on probation.I completed everything that I was asked to do and have since turned my life around completely.I have had a very hard time getting work in my field due to my nackround check.I work very hard everyday to be a good person and am a single Mom.I am going back to school in June 07 and want to major in criminal law/justice,I just need someone to give me a chance, I feel my calling is in law/forensics, would/could anyone look past my mistakes?Prior to that charge my record was 100% clean, not even a speeding ticket. Can anyone please advise me what to do? I appreciate anyone's advice/comments.TY for taking the time to read my ?'s.

Answer
Brianna, I can't really answer your question as to whether you can get a job in law enforcement with your conviction.  I can tell you that a single episode in one's life shouldn't mar that person for life.  If you can, with your background and with your interest in furthering your schooling, I would think that you could convince a recruiter that you are indeed a good candidate.  There are some who believe, and I am one of them, that when you err and see the error of your ways, you are better equipped to handle temptation when it confronts you.  Your problem with pain was in 2001.  By the time you finish your schooling, it will be close to ten years behind you.  That in itself is something you can hang your hat on and something a recruiter has to take note of.  If you see it in yourself, try to engage yourself in helping others...this goes a long way in showing your sincerity in what it is you are doing.  Be positive and reflect positivity in those you deal with...including those who are considering you for a job.  I really hope and pray that things work out for you Brianna...you sound like a really nice person.  Good luck.
