QuestionMy name is Alan im 16,i live in california and i would like to know what steps i should take to persue a career in SWAT,im graduating two years and was hoping you might be able to recomend some agencies web sites etc. that i could check out.
AnswerHello Alan,
This question, or a variation of it comes up quite often. You may want to review past answers I've given on the subject.
First, you'll want to keep your grades up. Stay away from trouble, and those who tend to get into trouble. NO DRUGS, or alcohol abuse.
Everything else you do amounts to what will be perceived as an asset, and make you a more attractive candidate.
Hand strength, upper body strength, endurance/stamina are givens.
Computer skills enhancement, bilingual is good, if the agency you are in deals with multicultural folks.
Keep in mind, that you'll have to hire on an agency as an entry level officer first. This is usually a uniform patrol officer. You'll need to distinguish yourself at this entry level position prior to being considered for a special assignment..i.e., SWAT.
Approximately 10% of all applicants to a police agency get hired. More drop out during further testing, academy, night problems scenarios, field training etc.
Then, you'll probably not be eligible for a special assignment until you are off probation, usually a couple years. I wouldn't look for a realistic shot at SWAT for the first 4-6 years if I were you. That is just my guessestimate.
Then, you'll be competing with officers who have extraordinary experience like Army Rangers/Special Forces, Navy SEAL, Marine Recon etc. Or even just former Military infantry is favorable. The issues are basic infantry tactics in an urban environment...not unlike contemporary police SWAT considerations.
That, plus maturity, acclimation to team, and unit discipline and attendant skill set.
Along with sniper or fire arms proficiency, there are other areas of expertise that are favorable: chemical munitions, communications, negotiation skills, first aid, repelling etc.
The more you can pony up, the better your chances, it's just that simple. Usually, seniority only applies to being able to compete. Beyond that, the SWAT commander requires the latitude to select the talent s/he needs.
Consider a hobby like martial arts. ANYTHING that makes you stand out among competitors is good.
Consider getting a job at a police agency you are interested in PRIOR to being old enough to be an officer. Jobs like cadet, courier, supply etc. This gives you an "insiders" peek at the organization and personnel dynamics that will serve you well. It will also help with college tuition. You may even be able to sit in on some SWAT or officer training sessions.
Well, maybe this is enough for you to digest and contemplate.
For web sites, try the LAPD and LASO. Also, try www.lvmpd.com
Hope it is helpful.
Good Luck, and regards,
