Careers: Police/police ranks

Question
I know police rankings may vary a little from city to city, but in a major city such as Ohio, how would the roles play into an investigation.

For instance, if there was a auto crash where no body was found so required further looking in to, I imagine the officers responding to an emergency call would be there, but would say a sergeant or lieutenant possibly be involved at some point?

I am writing a fictional story where a detective is called on to such a scene and I wasn't sure who from a big city police department would realistically already be there.

Answer
Unless it was a fatal crash the officers on the scene who responded would handle the call and accident report. Then the traffic investigator would follow it up. If it were a fatal accident the responding unit would call for a Sgt who would then call out a traffic investigator who would handle the accident.
Hope this helped.
