does a detective not exist?

You didnt offend....
Detectives are just police officers that are additionally trained, it is not to be considered a "promotion". You just put the word "Detective" in front of any of the following.
Constable - Sergeant - Inspector - Chief Inspector - Superintendent and Chief Superintendent
