Question
Mr. Rodgers
i have been trying to go on a ride along with a number of officers in my area and have had a hard time finding anyone that is willing to do it. currently i am in school getting my associates in justice technololy but have yet to complete it. do you have any suggestions that might help me achieve my goal.  any advise would be greatly appreiated

Answer
Melissa, it really surprises me that there would be agencies that do not encourage ride-alongs.  I suggest you go to the watch commander or, if the department if small, to the Chief of Police and indicate you interest in law enforcement.  Tell him that most of the major departments encourage ride-alongs to further understanding of what an officer is expected to do on each shift and to encourage young people to seek law enforcement as a career.  You can tell him or her that you talked to me an I would consider a department that doesn't allow for ride-alongs to either be backward or has something to hide.
