Expert: Jim Pastore - 10/26/2007
QuestionQUESTION: Hi. I have worked as a jailer now i want to work for the state dept of corrections for warren county. I filled out an application and answered it honestly that i had a conviction in 1995 it was expunged 5 or 6 years ago. I received a letter that stated because of my criminal record they would not hire me. What's the point of getting it expunged if i cant work in the field i love. Any advice
ANSWER: Kim
I guess I'd have to have a little more detail to understand your problem. What was the original charge they expunged? Did you serve any time for it? Was it a Felony or misdemeanor? These all can make a difference in the correction system. Because you would be dealing with prisoners they look at not only any arrests but your credit record and all. Their worries are smuggling in contraband, and things like that. Also what State are you in?

QUESTION: original charge was welfare fraud i served no time it was a 4th degree felony. I had to pay restitution and probation. I had filed for food stamps after that and the case worker looked up my history and it did show that i reported my income, so i should of never been charged. My ex husband canceled atty check so he did not represent me fairly. I worked for the sheriffs dept as a jailer 5 years after this conviction. I live in Cinti Ohio. I want to work for the department of corrections in Ohio. I have excellent references at the sheriffs dept. please advise me what to do.
AnswerKim,
I really don't know what to advise you. Different jurisdiction have different restrictions. Don't give up, you may have a chance with a different institution. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. My air went out and it's been too hot to get on here.
