Question
Hi my name is Tim, Im 15 and I want to know what I have to do to become a state trooper and what do you do as a state trooper. Should I join or not.

Answer
Tim, the duties vary from state to state.  Major crimes in some states are investigated primarily by state troopers.  In others, the sheriff's depts. and police agencies do the major crimes.  Some states the troopers are involved primarily in traffic enforcement, i.e., highway patrols.  You become a state trooper as you would any other law enforcement officer...keep a clean record, do well in school and go to college and take appropriate courses such as criminal justice, administration of justice, etc.  Hope this helps.

I`ve spent twenty-five years in law enforcement as a state trooper and deputy sheriff. Retired as a lead homicide investigator. My interest is in answering questions dealing with ethical and moral dilemmas facing officers in the field.
