Question
Hi,
I am a special education teacher in Australia. I have a Graduate Diploma, and a Masters Degree in Special Education, plus a Bachelor of Education (Primary). I have more than 15 years experience in teaching in special education. What chance do you think I would have of getting a teaching position anywhere in the US in special education?
Maureen D.......

Answer
Dear Maureen,

Actually, with the crack-down on education brought about by No Child Left Behind, you might have a very good chance.  There is a shortage of teachers in some areas.  The problem is that each state is different and has different requirements for certification.  Some states offer reciprocity to other states, but I have no idea about certification from other countries.

Your best bet is to write the State Department of Education from the states you might be interested in (at the state capital ... so, NH Department of Education, Concord, NH 03301 as an example) and ask them if you can get certified, what they would require, and if they know of any schools that would be interested in hiring someone from overseas.

You could also contact some universities in your target states and ask them what they know about availability of jobs in your field and how one would go about getting hired.

Also, contact Carnae & Sandoe in Boston, MA ... Carney, Sandoe & Associates, www.csa-teach.com ... they might even be able to find you a job!  They fill positions in many states and around the world!

I've not lived or worked in the US for the last 25 years, so this one is a tough one for me beyond this advice.

Best of luck.

Debba
