Question Hello Angela,
I am going into my second year of college and wish to pursue Elementary Education with a content major in Math with a middle school endorsement. For the last year, and the upcoming one, I have been at my local community college. After I have complete the upcoming year I will have my associates degree in general studies and plan on transferring to the best four year college in my state for future educators. The question I have is what I can do until I graduate.
Right now I work part-time in an assisted living home for the elderly. I would like to do something more relevant to my future career. I am also a counselor at a local camp, but that is only in the summertime. I am not sure what I could do during the school year, especially seeing it would have to be part time. In the fall, I do have 3 days in which I take night classes so I would be available those days.
Two things I could think of were a day care or going for my teaching assistant certification, but I would have to wait until after I complete my associates for the latter.
I live in Rhode Island if it helps.
Thank you very much,
Rose
Answer Hello, Rose. One suggestion is to tutor and/or babysit/nanny. These will give you experience with children that you can use when you get into the field of education, and have the flexible hours you need to work around your class schedule. In addition to this, you might like to try your hand at coaching (not sure if you'd need a coaches certificate in RI). Check with your local library and see if they're looking for volunteers/part timers to work in the children's library.
These should be a pretty good starting point. Let me know if I can be of any more help.
