AboutJames J. Kovalcin Expertise I am teaching or have taught AP physics B and C [calculus based mechanics & electricity and magnetism] as well as Lab Physics for college bound students. I have a BS in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Arts in Teaching from same. I have been teaching physics for 27 years.
Question Mr. Kovalcin:
First, I would like to thank you for taking the time and answering my question, and I apologize if it is one that has been ask many times.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality from MSU. I was happy with my career path, but like many college students, I wanted to do other things. In the end, I believe I settled. I have wanted to teach for quite sometime, and realize I will need to continue my education.
I do know here in the state of Missouri, I could teach if a school district hired me on a provisional certificate, while I was continuing my education. But, could I take the Praxis, in subject areas I believe I am knowledgeable in (I guess that is why I will take the test, it might tell me different. :)) and if I did pass be able to be a teacher in the state of Missouri?
I appreciate your time. Thank you.
Answer As you are probably aware each state has its own specific requirements. The University of Kentucky has a website which links to all 50 state's requirements at http://www.uky.edu/Education/TEP/usacert.html. In any case, the federal "No Child Left Behind" law requires, that for all practical purposes, that you must have a degree in the subject area in which you are teaching.
