Careers: Teaching/Unit Plan before teaching

Question
Hi
Why is it crucial or important to develop a unit plan before you begin to teach the unit?
Thanks
Eleonor

Answer
Dear Eleonor,

If you don't plan the unit, how will you know what you want the students to learn during the teaching of the unit?  You need to know what's important and what's not, approximately how long it will take to teach the concepts, what activities you will assign for maximum learning, and how you plan to evaluate your students' progress.  All these things are essential if you don't want to waste your students' (or your own) time.

Sincerely,
Bonnie
