Question
Hi Debba,

My goal is to one day teach in an International School.
I recently found a cost free M.Ed program that also makes me
eligible for teacher certification.  The M.Ed is cost free
because students are expected to teach full time in under
resourced schools in the USA while working on the Masters.
It's a 2 year program.  So essentially, I after 2 years, I
would have a M.Ed, a credential and two years full time
teaching under my belt.  My question is this:  WOuld you
recommend I go this route or should I just work on getting a
credential (one year) and then trying to land a paying job
while planning on getting my Masters later on?  I imagine I
would be more attractive to schools if I had a M.ed and two
years full time experience under my belt.  But do you think
a credential would be enough to be competitive?

Answer
Hi, Antonio,

My first question is whether or not this program is for US teachers - since I see you are in Thailand.  If it is, then you should contact the accrediting agency for that program to be sure your degree would be considered 'worthy' (for lack of a better word).  If it is, then I think you will be far better prepared going that route.  While some schools will take you without any experience, most want to see that you have been a successful teacher.

The fact that you (apparently) have lived in a developing country will also stand you in good stead.  People who have experience living internationally have several steps up on those who don't, especially if the locations were considered at all difficult for political or economic reasons.

Good luck!

Debba
