Careers: Teaching/Financial rankings

Question
Hello, Bonnie,

I'm hoping that you can help me find some information on the net. I have so far been unsuccessful.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (an area comprised of nine counties). I would like to find a ranking of how each Bay Area school district is doing financially. Such a ranking should be able to tell me which ones have steady funds coming in (e.g. Palo Alto), and which ones have students who are hurting due to recession-related cutbacks.

I'm assuming that this information must exist *somewhere*, but I've had trouble finding it.

Do you have any ideas where I might look?

Thank you so much for your time.  :-)
Jan

Answer
Dear Jan,

California school districts are funded in two ways:  1) by allocations from the state based on student attendance or, 2) "Basic Aid" districts which accept no state school funding and are independently financed through local property taxes.  The Basic Aid districts are less susceptible to state cutbacks, so therefore would have steadier streams of income.

I have found a list of Basic Aid districts in the California Department of Education website.  For this information, consult cde.ca.gov and look at "Schedule of Basic Aid Districts."  More information can be had a edsource.org.

I hope this is of some assistance to you.

Bonnie
