Careers: Teaching/Dept of Defense School

Question
Hi, I read your profile and was hoping you could give me some information on teaching overseas, namely in the Department of Defense schools. Is it difficult to get a job?  Are they responsive to new teachers (like myself) or do they prefer more experience?  Any information you have is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Answer
Angela,

Here is what my friend said:

....contact the main office in Alexandria, Virginia.
I think they still process all of the applications there. I found that some
people I knew who filed their applications later were hired very fast, as
openings arose in the summer and I think their applications were on the top
of the pile. Things may be different now. I still have friends teaching in
schools in Okinawa and Korea. I could put them in touch with your friend if
that would help.

Dear Angela,

I'm not exactly sure how to get 'into' the DOD schools.  You should probably call their office, directly, and ask.  There should be a number you can call for the Department of Defense if you contact information.

Now, do they take first year teachers?  I'm sure they do for some positions - high school math was a big one a few years ago.  Sciences generally are hard to fill and could be available for new teachers.  But elementary teachers are a dime a dozen and they might not be quite so ready to do so there.  I am not sure.

I have a friend who worked for DOD schools.  Let me write to her and get back to you when she responds.  If you don't hear from me in a few days, PLEASE write back to remind me.
