Question
I am in the process of moving to California from the UK (I am a Canadian citizen, though) and it seems that ESL is a very hard proffession to be in. I have just completed a TESOL with Trinity College in London. From my searchers here it appears that all the good jobs are in Europe and that I will have to rethink my employment prospects. What are your thoughts?
Many thanks,

Maya

Answer
Dear Maya,

Yes, ESL in the US is not the priority it is in foreign countries, though I'm sure there are positions where there is a large population of Mexicans, Asians, etc.  I should think parts of California have a need but you may want to contact the State Department of Education in Sacramento for specific openings or a map of regions requiring more teachers in your field.

As far as Europe and overseas, international schools around the world have ESL teachers on staff and, if you are available to move anywhere, you might want to explore those possibilities.  You can subscribe to TIE online (The International Educator) or contact International Schools Services in NJ for more information on teaching in international schools.

If you aren't looking to earn TONS of money - but want experience, I happen to be looking for native English speakers to teach in a new Christian school here in Indonesia.  If you have an interest in moving overseas, please let me know and we can pursue things further - but don't feel obligated at all.  Just felt it might be worth mentioning to you.  If you have elementary teacher training that would be an additional plus but not a requirement.  (Please do not let the recent bombing in Jakarta make you fearful.  I've lived here 8 years, though lots of civil unrest, and have had no problems.  I DO have to 'maintain a low profile' and do not spend a lot of time out and about recreationally, but I am not a prisoner in my own home, either.)

Do get back to me if you want me to present more options for you, after you do some more research.  I'm happy to help you, wherever you might wish to go.
