Careers: Teaching/Teaching as a career.

QuestionDear Ms. Lutz,
I'm 43 years old and thinking of becoming a teacher. It would take me about two years to complete the education for this. I want to do this as up to now I have been working nights teaching martial arts to kids and adults. As I am a single parent you can imagine how this plays havoc with family life etc.. I pretty positive and upbeat and enjoy working with kids of all ages. I think teaching would a fulfilling and worthwhile endeavour. I've always been a good student and think I could do the job. I have two questions for you...
1-Are there jobs out there for teachers right now and;
2-Is 43 too old to start teaching. I figure I've got a lot of productive years left.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to your response.
AnswerHi Mark,
I am assuming that you have 2 years of college already as teaching is a 4 year college course.
In the next 5 years all of us "baby boomers" will be going to retire so you have picked a wonderful time to seek this new career.
Your age will only help as many communities are looking for older more mature teachers. Also you will do well as there are fewer and fewer men in education.
Good luck on your new endever. Let me know how you make out.
Jeanne
