Question
Hey there,
I am an Australian citizen and Im just about to graduate from a bachelors degree in primary education out here in Auckland, New zealand. I am still deciding whether I want to go ahead an pursue my masters in Education.

Im just wondering, what are the terms and conditions for an overseas graduate in order for me to teach over in california? how do i go about getting a job out there straight after i graduate? and also what schools in california are great for me to pursue my masters in education?

Answer
Dear JV,

Congratulations on your pending degree!

In order to teach in California you will need to get a teaching certificate from the Department of Education in Sacramento.  If you contact them, they can tell you the specific requirements.  Each state in the US is different, but I know that California requires a number of very specific courses that can only be taken in that state.  I hold a New Hampshire teaching certificate and was unable to get credentials to teach in California a number of years ago unless I was willing to take a mess of extra classes ... which I wasn't, at the time.

You need to write directly to the department of education, or visit their website, to see what you don't have already and then you will need to find a school to attend in order to get what you need.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what schools to recommend.  I've never lived or worked beyond the state of Ohio, which is a FAR piece from California.  I think most schools out there are pretty good - but contacting WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) might give you information on schools they evaluate.  A search on the net should put you in contact with them.

I hope what I have said is helpful - I realize I don't have the answers you want, but I think I have made suggestions that will give you more ways to explore what you need.  Best of luck to you.
