Careers: Teaching - what kind of degree is needed?

Expert: Debba Robinson - 12/3/2006

Question
Hello, thank you for your time. I was wondering what kind of degree is needed for teaching abroad with an international school? I've noticed that some schools offer a masters degree specifically for teaching overseas. Do you think this is necessary? I just graduated last year with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature and a minor in Russian. Do you know what subjects are the most sought after for teaching positions abroad?

Answer
Dear Nikki,

Although I could hazard a guess and say that Math / Science teachers are the most sought-after, I think they are just the hardest to find since there are not as many available.  Some international schools are looking for the unusual - and I think a minor in Russian would qualify you for that status and might be helpful in making you stand out as someone special.

Rather than my opinion, someone who has not been in the recruiting arena for more than 10 years, though, I suggest you write directly to the people who do this for a living.  International Schools Services can answer your questions with a high level of accuracy because they help schools find teachers 365 days a year.

At the bottom there is a link to e-mail them directly with questions that were not answered by their website.

Best of luck to you.
