Answer
Dear Shefali,

You have to begin at the US embassy in India.  People who wish to emigrate to the US have to make application.  I know there are some professions that automatically gain access - but I don't think it is teachers, although with the current laws regarding education, there may be a teacher shortage that would get you a better chance.

Because I'm a citizen, I don't really know what a non-citizen has to do.  What I'm telling you is based on what I've heard from friends - and since I've not lived in the US for the last 17 years, it's hard to know what is and isn't fact.

To 'get your foot in the door', it would help if you had a sponsor in the US.  When you are 'state specific', you reduce your options ... in the beginning you need to just get SOME state to accept you.  Once you are in, you can relocate more easily, I think.

Check with the state departments of education in each state (located in the state capital).  Find out if your certification will transfer.  You might find that you need some specific courses, which I know is true in California (California history is one), and getting a student visa to take those courses might do the trick.

I wish I could be more help.  But, I hope you find something here with which to work.

Debba
