Careers: Writing/Starting out a writing career
Expert: Susan Rand - 3/12/2008
QuestionI don't mean to be boastful, but I have always had a knack for writing. From K-8, I would always go above and beyond the requirement for creative writing, and in high school I did very well on written assignments (baring some spelling errors :D). I have kept creative writing a small hobby of mine, writing during slow times at various jobs and at home when I felt like it. After reading an Isaac Asimov compilation, it occurred to me that I could pursue writing to supplement my income, and have fun with it along the way. I know it's a long shot, but I feel that if I dedicated some serious time to it, I could write a great novel one day. So my question to you is, where do I start? How does one get their name known, published, etc.? Thanks in advance for the help.
AnswerHello Conor:
Why shouldn't you boast? That is a rare accomplishment! So many people claim to be good writers but their work shows lack of education and experience. I know, I deal with them all the time!
I am assuming that "where do I start" applies to making a little money writing, and not to the novel. Much depends on answers to the following questions:
1. What do you like to write? (Hint - what do you like to read?) Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?
2. Are you prepared to put in the time and research to write articles on a wide range of subjects? This is the quickest way to break into the market. Check out
http://associatedcontent.com They buy articles and are very good about paying, though they don't pay much, you do get a little extra every time someone reads your work. I have around 60 articles published there. That's how I started, and am now getting assignments. Getting your name out there is invaluable.
3. Do you have a website? If not, get one, and put some of your writing up there.
4. Do you need guidance? At my website,
http://pygmypress.com I offer editing and mentoring services at reasonable rates - $2 per page, or "lesson!"
I would also suggest you go to

I hope this helps. If it has, a good rating would be greatly appreciated. I am proud of my high score over 1300+ questions.
And good luck with your writing!
