Question
Hello Susan

I am writing my first novel and I have a quick question. I have read books where the author brings up references of celebrities, franchises or products. If I wanted to reference the game "Clue" or something along the lines of what I previously mentioned, what would I have to do? Do I have to get some type of permission, I assume?

Thanks!
~Cady

Answer
Hello Cady:

Those books you have read that reference celebrities, products, etc., were they fiction or non-fiction? My guess is they were non-fiction. Real products, people, etc., are not normally used in fiction, for reasons an attorney can explain to you.

I would advise you to think up a new word for a murder mystery game. Here are a few possibilities: Solve It, Investigator, Poleez, Puzzle Pieces. I'm sure that with a little thought, you can come up with plenty on your own. Don't use the first few you think of, make a list of at least 10. This negates the need for any kind of permission, which is sometimes difficult, or impossible to procure.

I hope this helps. If it does, a nice rating would be greatly appreciated.  I am proud of my high score over 1350+ questions.

And good luck with your writing!
