Careers: Writing/All Rights

Question
If I sell all rights to a specific article is there any amount of "re-working" I can do to the article to make it mine to use for a contest or sell again?  Obviously they own the original article, but if that piece is re-worked then it is not the same article.  What is the scope of "all rights" in this regard.

Answer
Hi, Tammie!

I saw your question in the pool and thought I'd try to help out. For an article, you may re-use your research and the basic concept of the article. I also save information I've gathered for sidebars and any expert quotes. Don't make the quote EXACTLY the same as the first article, of course, but no doubt you talked to the expert longer than a single quote.

But as for the actual construction---sentence structure and paragraphs and word choice---those are mostly prohibited. In other words, you can take the very same flour, salt, sugar and eggs and make a NEW cake, but the old cake has already been eaten unless you reserved reprint rights. :)

Good luck!
