Careers: Writing/anti-motive

Question
Hi Cathy,

What is the meaning of anti-motive cause of something?

Answer
Hi, nawd,

An anti-motive is something like "duty". It's an internal motivation but caused by an external force. Duty to perform drives a person to the exclusion of rational thought. It can be a good motivation, like where a person might flee a violent scene out of self-preservation. The feeling or oath of duty in a fire fighter or police officer might force them forward into the danger.

Likewise, a feeling of duty can be negative, such as duty to a family might make a person give up or suppress feelings of love for a person that the family disapproves of.

Does that help?
