Careers: Writing/Becoming an editor/copyeditor

Question
I've been determined to become an editor or copyeditor since about eighth grade. I've tried to get a lot of experience in high school (I was editor of the school newspaper for two years, editor of the yearbook, I was an editorial intern at an environmental inspection firm for 2 summers). I'm particularly interested in editing novels. I'm in 12th grade now, I have to apply to college, and I'm not sure what to do. First of all, is an English degree what I should be aiming for? And second, does going to a particularly well-known college (Ivy league) help in getting a job? Is there anything I need to know?

Thanks!
Miriam

Answer
Dear Miriam,

I'm not sure whether this is good news or bad, but there's no automatic entry path into the editing field. In my situation, I'm largely self-taught, with no academic credentials to support my successful time as a freelance editor.

The most important qualificaton you'll need, and the one that will guarantee that you'll love what you do, is a love of words, of language and of detail.

Look, as you're already doing, for internships, even volunteer work, at your local newspaper or any magazines published in your town. Get all the experience you can, for that will ultimately be worth more than any academic degree. And be sure to get references from every place you do intern.

Having said that, if you're looking to break into the New York publishing scene, then an English degree from a recognizable institution is probably a good idea. You might also check out journalism schools to see if their offerings include classes/courses in editing.

Good luck!
